Changes to NHS Orthodontic Services Kirklees and Calderdale April 2020.
What is happening?
From April 2020 the contract for providing NHS orthodontic care in Calderdale, Huddersfield and Kirklees Dewsbury/Batley will transfer from Only Orthodontics to Saltaire Orthodontics following a procurement process. This has been totally out of our control and implemented against our wishes.
Only Orthodontics will very regrettably no longer be able to offer orthodontic treatment on the NHS. Saltaire Orthodontics will be based in 3 locations: 8-10 Crossley Street, Halifax, HX1 1UG; 215-217 Bradford Road, Dewsbury, WF13 2HD and 84 New North Road Huddersfield, HD1 5NE. What does this mean for you?
Only Orthodontics are dedicated to ensuring our patients receive the best care possible, with minimal disruption. So an agreement with NHS England has been put in place to ensure a continuation of service for our patients who are currently in treatment and they should experience no change moving forwards.
This means that if you or your child is already receiving orthodontic treatment with us, you will not need to transfer to a new orthodontist. Up until the point where you can be discharged, you will be treated by the same team as you are now.
Although we are still receiving referrals, we can discuss treatment options but we will not be able to undertake any treatment under NHS arrangements. If you or your child has an appointment scheduled with us, this will take place as arranged.
Patients on the waiting list
The only difference will apply to patients who have received an assessment, but are yet to start treatment.
We have now transferred the waiting list patient data to the new provider through the Referral Management System. Now this is in place patients should receive confirmation from the NHS who have reassured us that you will maintain your current place on the waiting list. However, waiting time to start treatment will inevitably increase as our waiting list will merge with at least 3 others in the area.
Only Orthodontics and NHS England are working closely together to ensure a smooth and easy transition for these patients, and you will be kept up to date on all information regarding the transfer of your or your child’s treatment.
Patients on Review and Recall
It is important to be aware that patients on Recall and Review are NOT on the waiting list as they require more careful management. Although you were seen at Only Orthodontics for an initial assessment very regrettably, we will now not be able to offer you NHS orthodontic treatment.
A review appointment will be sent out as scheduled and this will allow us to discuss future treatment options with you and you are welcome to attend this appointment with us.
Alternatively you can ask your dentist to refer you to Saltaire Orthodontics who can provide NHS treatment as a new patient if you would prefer. However, waiting times to commence treatment are expected to increase due to the change in provision and the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
Are there any changes to NHS funding for children?
If your child currently receives NHS funding for their orthodontic care, this will continue as normal.
NHS orthodontic treatment for children is free for those who are in the qualifying categories and there will be no changes to the funding arrangements.
